An air-assist pump, hose, and nozzle for a diode laser.

Laser tools and safety gear

Never laser PVC/vinyl

Air assist A pump that blows the cut so edges stay cleaner.

Air assist is a small pump that blows across the cut. It keeps flame and char from sitting on a wood edge.

It does not remove smoke from the room. You still need the fumes to leave. Add it when you cut wood and the edges look burnt.

Good for

  • Cleaner cuts
  • Less char
  • Wood
  • Acrylic
Honeycomb bed A metal grid under the sheet for through-cuts.

A honeycomb is a metal grid that holds a sheet up and lets smoke and the beam fall through. That reduces scorch on the back of a through-cut.

It is for flat sheets you cut all the way through. It is not a reason to leave the machine running alone.

Good for

  • Flat sheets
  • Through-cuts
  • Less scorch
Fume extractor A fan or duct that gets smoke out.

A fume extractor is a fan, a filter, or a duct that takes smoke out of the room. Wood and acrylic both make smoke you should not breathe.

A filter box in a closed room is not the same as a duct out a window. Read the fume guide before you buy the quietest box on the list.

Good for

  • Wood smoke
  • Acrylic
  • Enclosed diode
Laser safety glasses Glasses matched to your beam. Pairs are not interchangeable.

Safety glasses have to match the wavelength of the laser that is on. A pair for a blue diode is the wrong pair for a CO2 tube or a fiber laser.

The rating is printed on the glasses and in the machine manual. If a listing photo disagrees with the manual, trust the manual and the frame.

Good for

  • 445 nm diode
  • 10,600 nm CO2
  • 1064 nm fiber
Rotary attachment A roller that turns a cup while the laser marks.

A rotary is a roller or a chuck that turns a tumbler, a glass, or a bottle while the laser marks it. Without it, the beam only hits one stripe.

The cup has to be the kind your laser can mark. A coated tumbler and bare steel are different. You may also need a riser so the cup fits under the head.

Good for

  • Tumblers
  • Glasses
  • Bottles
Riser / base Feet that lift the machine so a tumbler fits.

A riser is a set of feet or a frame that lifts the laser so a tumbler or a rotary has room underneath.

Measure the cup and the head travel before you buy feet. The wrong height either hits the cup or leaves the beam out of focus.

Good for

  • Tumblers
  • Rotary clearance
  • Taller blanks
Test material packs Small mixed blanks for a test mark before a sheet.

A test pack is a handful of small blanks so you can find a setting before you ruin a full sheet.

A test on basswood does not transfer to acrylic or leather. Test the material you will actually run.

Good for

  • First tests
  • Mixed woods
  • Sample marks
Masking & transfer tape Paper tape to hold a sheet. Not vinyl tape.

Paper masking tape holds a thin sheet or protects a surface. Transfer tape made of paper can lift a cut.

Vinyl tape is not the same product. Do not laser vinyl. If the tape is plastic and you cannot name it, peel it off first.

Good for

  • Hold-down
  • Masking
  • Paper transfer
Calipers A tool that measures thickness before you cut.

Calipers measure how thick a sheet actually is. “One-eighth inch” on a label is not always 3.2 mm.

Thickness changes how many passes a cut needs. Measure the sheet you received, not the one you ordered.

Good for

  • Thickness
  • Fit checks
  • Repeat jobs
Fire extinguisher An extinguisher you can reach without leaving the machine.

An ABC or CO2 extinguisher belongs where you can grab it without turning your back on a burning sheet. Wood and paper jobs start small fires.

Read the extinguisher’s own instructions. Know how to stop the laser. An extinguisher across the room is a decoration.

Good for

  • Shop fire
  • Within reach
  • ABC or CO2
