Design

Your first sellable design

A name sign. One word or two, in letters you are allowed to use. Then a scrap test, two photos, and a price.

Skip the character, the team logo, and the movie quote. Use a first name, a family name, or a short phrase you wrote. That is the design you can sell without borrowing someone else’s rights. The SVG license guide covers files you did not draw.

Draw the name

You only need one of these apps. Use the one that matches what you already have.

In Inkscape

  1. Open Inkscape Opens in a new tab. . It is free.
  2. Click the text tool and type the name. Pick a bold font. Thin lines disappear on wood.
  3. Select the text. Use Path, then Object to Path. The letters become shapes a laser can follow.
  4. Save a copy as SVG.
  5. Open that SVG in the app that talks to your laser: LightBurn Opens in a new tab. , xTool Opens in a new tab. , or the software that came with the machine.

In LightBurn

  1. Open LightBurn. The 30-day trial Opens in a new tab. is the full app.
  2. Use the text tool, type the name, and drag it to the size of the blank.
  3. You can send the job from LightBurn. You do not have to export first if your laser is on LightBurn’s list.

Leave a margin around the letters. A name that touches the edge of the wood looks like a mistake.

Test the material

Use a scrap of the same wood you plan to sell. Engrave the first letter, or a small square, a few times. Change only one thing between passes: speed, or power, not both. Keep the scrap. Write the pair that looks right on the back.

This page does not list a speed or a power. Those numbers belong to your laser and that piece of wood. A setting copied from a forum is how a blank catches fire. Stay with the job.

Take the photos

Shoot in daylight, near a window, with the sign on a plain table. Take two pictures:

  • The whole sign, with a little table showing around it, so a buyer can see the size.
  • A close photo of the letters, so the engraving is easy to see on a phone.

Wipe off the dust first. A flash from above turns the wood into a white glare. Those two photos are enough for a first listing.

Price the piece

Add the cost of one blank, the minutes the laser runs, and something for the blanks you ruin while you learn. Then decide what you want left after the marketplace fee.

The price calculator does that arithmetic in the browser. The numbers already typed into it are placeholders, not LaserNook prices. Replace every field with your blank and your minutes. A name sign that takes eight minutes should not be priced like a sign that takes forty.

Sell the wooden sign. If you also want to sell the SVG, sell a file you drew, and say so on the listing. Do not upload a file you downloaded from a library. Those licenses are covered in the SVG license guide.
